Abbreviation of minutes in English on identifications is inconsistent

On another thread someone mentioned checking what the abbreviation for minutes is:

It’s doesn’t seem to be consistent which is used. I would expect it to be “min” as that’s the SI standard, but both min & m are used. I thought one might be for plural and the other singular but I can’t see any consistent pattern. Shouldn’t it always be “min”?

Very inconsistent indeed. That’s why I had to try it to remind myself, because I thought I’d seen it as “m”.

As it turns out, it’s “min” for the 1st minute, and “m” for the 2nd - 59th minutes!
