Adding a taxon to project but not restricting other additions

Hello,

I have a project (Hybrid Mammals) and I would like to add some taxa to automatically be included but to NOT restrict other additions. Like I want to have the 900+ observations of Common × Black-tufted-ear Marmoset Callithrix jacchus × penicillata etc. (and likewise for all species I know about) but I don’t want people to only be able to add taxa on the list because there are lots of hybrids out there that I don’t know about. Is this possible? As far as I can tell, if I make a list, the project is restricted to only the taxa present on the list. If not, is this something the programmers can consider? I have seen this type of issue with other projects. Thanks.

It’s not possible to both automatically add observations of known hybrid taxa and also let people manually add observations of other not-yet-known-to-you hybrid taxa in one project, no.

You can get the list of all hybrid mammal taxa present on iNaturalist by downloading https://www.inaturalist.org/taxa/inaturalist-taxonomy.dwca.zip and extracting the names from taxa.csv. Then you could create a collection project that automatically adds obervations of all of those. If a new hybrid taxon is added to iNat, you can easily update the project to add the new taxon.

Depending on what your goal is, a project may not be necessary as you can just search for observations at rank=hybrid: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?rank=hybrid&iconic_taxa=Mammalia

You could also create a list of taxa to include all hybrid ranks, e.g. https://www.inaturalist.org/lists/4552571-Hybrid-mammals and use that to search for observations of taxa that are on the list: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?list_id=4552571

That is some good information and helps answer a good portion (it would be nice to be able to manually add in addition to lists) although it does not help when there are new hybrids not yet on iNaturalist. Thank you!

Also, how do you search for rank=hybrid (for other taxa)?

I just type that right into the URL (more about constructing URLs beyond what’s available in the filters here: https://www.inaturalist.org/pages/search+urls)
