The extremely wide but short map on the Places page has always been an issue for me. I think a re-size bar to be able to drag and make it taller would be ideal, but even just making it default to a little taller would be helpful. I always end up full-screening the map when I need to look at it, which then makes everything else on the page not visible!

I agree! The all or (almost) nothing choices currently available are not ideal.
Perhaps the map should be moved to the right side of the screen. Reduce the amount of space for the photos of species/observations, and allow more of a square space for the map.
