Recently I have made a bunch of landscape photos to document the impacts of a wildfire that happened close to where I live. Now I’m wondering if there is any place on the internet, where you can save and aggregate landscape photos like this for citizen science. I’m not only interested in making these couple dozens of photos go to good use (that’s probably not that important), but it would also be something I’d like to browse, maybe I can find some interesting areas for me to visit in the future, or just marvel at the diversity of different landscapes and ecosystems from the comfort of home.
I know that iNat isn’t really the right place for this, as has been discussed elsewhere ( https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/dealing-with-landscape-photos-when-the-observer-clearly-intended-it-as-a-landscape-photo/74353 ). The purpose of iNaturalist is to document organisms not landscapes or habitats; and I don’t think that will change any time soon. Of course you could make a bunch of casual grade observations, identify them to life and maybe make a new project or field for these kind of landscape photos. But I think that route won’t see many people using it, as it will be awkward and not the intended use case of iNaturalist. If it came down to that option, it would be better to do nothing at all. The main question is still: are there other platforms, where such projects make sense and are desired?
