Birding/Birdwatching Discussion Topic

Well, my brother doesn’t do bird watching, he’s in the Air Force cadets, and goes on bivouacs! He’s going on a survival exercise soon, so he gets really covered in mud! He’ll come home dirty and disgusting!

As I type this, there’s a crested serpent eagle calling from the trees. Hope I catch a glimpse of it.

I hope so!

Really hard to get it sitting down… You have CSE in Bangalore too? It’s quite common here, but mostly flying high on the air, doing cheeeee-cheweew continuously!

Awesome, where they making that racket that they usually do? Like, ka-ka-ka-ka-ka-ka, or the rather weird and mettalic ko-kew?

I saw this elusive Black-Backed Dwarf Kingfisher a few days ago…

The observation is here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/312943902, but I have obscured the location because photographers do absolutely crazy unethical things to get good photos of this bird. You can tell that my photo is completely ethical by the photo quality,.

It’s found in the Western Ghats, Sri Lanka, Northeast India and other South-east Asian forests. Something @austin_ajit won’t be able to see in Bangalore, :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:. I guess he will have to come to the Western Ghats to see it.

I saw it soaring high, barely even visible. It was making the metallic ‘kyow- kyaa" sounds it usually makes here.

So CSEs from different locations make different sounds? The one I have here sounds like the second recording from https://ebird.org/species/crseag1?siteLanguage=en_IN.

That’s the same sound I heard. I just translated it to words in a different way. I’m bad at describing bird calls lol

Most talkative eagle I have seen. Maybe because they hunt snakes which are as deaf as stones. I’m pretty sure eagles which hunt rabbits and birds don’t keep screeching endlessly!

Ikr! They socialize with other CSEs a lot!

Even if you here the eBird recording, there at least two other CSEs calling in the background! Even here, they come in groups of 2-3 eagle and keep on communicating. They attract lot of Shikras, who keep chasing them away. Serves them right for babbling continuously…

Please note that Shikras aren’t that quiet either.

Shikras make noise?! I’ve never heard a shikra call before.

Yes, THEY MAKE NOISE! You must have heard the harsh ti-teev ti-teev ti-teev, or just the teev. Especially in summer the female keeps on doing it all day. It gets rather annoying after a while. Much like a Black Drongo but much harsher and more high-pitched.

What is everybody’s target bird for the rest of the year? Why? :bullseye:

I know my chances are really low but I would love to see a Connecticut warbler. They are only really possible to see during fall migration around now to mid October and they would be a lifer. I love warblers and the Connecticut is a challenge to find.

To photograph or to just see?

To photograph it would be the Rufous Woodpecker or the Grey Heron, practically speaking, since I have seen both.

To see it would be something like a Lesser Adjutant? I know… very unpractically speaking.

I want to see a crossbill this year, because they’re cute and cool and I haven’t seen one.
