Birding/Birdwatching Discussion Topic

Yippee!

I finally can afford a good enough camera for birdwatching!

A good camera-lens set is a fortune around here, but I managed to buy a Canon R100 and a 100-400mm lens to go with it.

The lens will arrive mid-January or something… but It’ll be worth it!

I got no birdfeeders (yet). All I got are bird pools.

Now this is a proper start for my name’s day!

i hot woken up by some blue tits, and then took this photo of a wren!

The actual first I see in person  as I’ve only heard before. The look ready for the bird feeders!

Ah that reminds me, should i be shelling the peanuts? I’ve had cardinals and sparrows come, although in small quantities with the shelled peanuts (unroasted, unsalted)

I just had a really late Field Sparrow yesterday!

Really cool to see one in the snow! I’m hoping to refind it soon. It even fought with an American Tree Sparrow. I wonder how often these birds cross paths?

It can be fun to watch some of the larger birds (Blue Jays, for instance if you have them) wrestle with the shelled peanuts, but in my experience, the Cardinals, sparrows, Titmice, chickadees, and other smaller birds ignore them. It’s much easier for them to eat the unshelled, raw peanuts.

We just got some snow here in West Virginia. How is the weather in y’alls area? Any good birds moving with the weather conditions where you live? There have been some Swans and Geese reported in my area. Waterfowl love to move around in the winter, so keep a look out! I can’t wait to see the Greater-White fronted Geese in my area!

Denver just got out first measurable snowfall, over a month late. We should have had two or three in the 1 inch / 2.5 cm range by now, so naturally, we’re getting them all at once. Ummm, yay? :woman_shrugging:

Saw some little brown / gray fast moving jobs in the trees earlier, but didn’t have the camera. Most likely suspects are House Finches and / or Bushtits.

We just got a snow dump until now it has just been dustings or an inch or two. Of course I don’t mind birds get extra interested in the bird feeder. We got a lot of Dark-eyed juncos, amongst other birds. Like a tail-less cardinal! Poor thing! Her flight pattern is not smooth without the steering from the tail. She was visiting our feeder during the storm.

Meanwhile in South Australia… we finally are starting to get hot weather. Hot, hot, hot, though it will get hotter and I’m looking forward to it!

Why are you looking forward to the heat? Is there something exciting that happens bird wise?

Here in Ohio we just got a nice 2 inch snowfall! Although I didn’t photograph any birds since I was focusing on springtails.

Wow, in northeast Ohio we just got a giant snowstorm, resulting in 8-13 inches in some areas!

I love summer, it’s my favourite season because I get to go to the pool and do a ton of fun stuff. But birding related, it’s finally the Yellow Tailed Black Cockatoo season, which means I hopefully will get some good photos of them this year! They are one my favourite birds. Also, the magpie swooping season is thankfully over, so I can ride my bike through our town without being swooped! I don’t like the cold, and I’m sure snow would be fun, but I’ve never seen it before. And for me personally, I love the heat.

I hope you get that photo!

We do have a lot of cold here in India, but we do not have snow. The Drongos and Shrikes are starting to come out now, though.

Woah, we had it easy here in Dayton! By now the snow around here is starting to melt a bit, but even as it had just fallen, springtails were out and about trying to dig down (took loads of videos too, which I really need to edit). The most I’ve ever seen was in January this year, when we got at least 8 inches, which is too high even for springtails, so did photograph birds then! Though my birding lens remains mostly untouched since…
