Birding/Birdwatching Discussion Topic

Thanks! I’ll send my feedback soon. My grandparents live in a jungle (kinda), with mongooses and hornbills. So I can’t wait to go there!

I checked, and sadly it does look like an American thing. They should make a worldwide one, there are a lot of great birders all over!

I did one last year, and it was pretty lame, because I live in a small town with few birders.

I’m so sorry I got busy this morning. I’ll create the poll now. Thanks for the reminder .

Bird of the week poll is open. Please vote. Whichever bird is voted in the most will be the bird of the week starting next Monday. Have fun and stay safe :grinning:.

I added a special bonus bird to the poll.

Earlier this week, on Dec. 10, I put up a feeder for sunflower seeds, hoping to attract the winter birds since they had stopped coming to my finch feeder. See story at Squirrels and Birdseed - Nature Talk - iNaturalist Community Forum. I wasn’t sure if they had found it yet.

But my computer is just inside the window so I can see and hear the birds when they come to the feeders. Just now I heard a Black-capped Chickadee so I looked up. No one at the finch feeder…but what’s that? A bird at my sunflower squirrel buster feeder!

It saw me move and flew into the tree. I picked up my camera to get a picture but it flew off. However, I heard it say its name so I know that a chickadee (Black-capped is the only Chickadee in this part of the country) visited my new feeder. I am so excited. Here’s a picture of the feeders. I’m inside the window on the far left.

Those two feeders look really close together from this angle but I measured and they are 18 to 20 inches/45 to 50 cm apart. The yellow one is the finch feeder that I put up in April. The green one is the new feeder. Here it is by itself.

Wow! That is so cool! I love those feeders. The Black Capped Chickadee is such a cool bird.

I think I may have seen some redpolls today.
I haven’t seen any since last winter when they sat at the bird feeder for the majority of the day and annoyed the nuthatches until they would start bumping the redpolls off the feeder.

Hey y’all, do you have any recommendations for making money during the winter months? Maybe I could make some different things like bird feeders?

I just came home from my CBC! Long Day.
Here is my eBird Trip report for the day:

Maybe try making birdhouses. I used to do that a bit with my Dad, and that was fun. Bird feeders are a good idea, too…some of them are actually quite easy to make, like the hanging wooden trays.

Thanks for the recommendation!

Seems like you had a good birding day!

I sure did! My highlights of the day was a flyover Glaucous Gull and a late Hermit Thrush.

My trip report is pretty short, but I had fun seeing familiar species! :)

I heard a Hermit Thrush calling on my CBC this morning.

That sounds good! I also recommend bird houses, as it’s good to hang them up before spring. https://nestwatch.org/learn/all-about-birdhouses/
