We are building an EcoPark in the Smokies and have a scheduled BioBlitz for May. Can you fine folks help me understand how to create a map of our project area? It is Running Rock Biodiversity Project. And if any of you are interested in offering advice, I am all ears.
Use Google Earth to draw a boundary line around the EcoPark (make it just very slightly larger than the exact edge of the park. Export it from Google Earth as a .kml file and then use it to create a Place in iNaturalist (always check that there is not a place for that site already existing in iNat) and then create a project (collection ?) and use the place in the project which will then collect all records from within that boundary and allow you and visitors to see what has been recorded within the park. If you need any further help then give me a shout.
Does the place you are covering already have an official map boundary that was created by some person or agency, but not yet in iNaturalist places?
It does but its easy for me to draw out. Exact boundary is not absolutely necessary.
Google My Maps is another easy option, just create a new map then create a polygon in it and export the layer as a KML.
Following your instructions now and let’s see how it goes:-)
Its now exported. I’m in settings but it’s not allowing me to drop it in INCLUDE PLACES. Where do I insert it in the project?
You need to add the place separately to iNat before it can be included in the project. However, you must add 50 verifiable observations before you can add new places to iNat.
That’s it. I’m new and ready to roll but haven’t collected my 50 yet. TY
Dropping the Help page about this for other people stumbling on this topic, if they want step by step instructions https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000175019-how-to-make-a-place-on-inaturalist
Excelent. TY very much. Happy hunting!
