Please help with the etymology of _ **osyrensis** _ as in _Argyreia osyrensis_ (Roth) Choisy

The suffix _ensis_ would mean “of or from some place”. However, I was not able to find.

In my post at Google Group [efloraofindia](https://groups.google.com/g/indiantreepix/c/i06s6Q87bC8/m/wy49HB-kNpYJ), Ron suggested it may have some connection with sandalwoods in some manner … stemming from _osyr_ - Greek _Osyris_ - genus of plants in the Family Santalacea - many of its genus known as sandalwoods. His perspective that it could be a place where sandalwoods grow, is the nearest possibility of finding what _osyrensis_ is named for.

Looking forward to know about this epithet’s etymology.

Can you find a copy (scanned online?) of the 1845 description?

Based on the original descriptions I think it’s referring to a place called “Osyre” in India. But I cannot find a modern name for the place so I could be way off mark

After some further looking I think that it is (or was) a place in Dutch East India

from [https://www.ipni.org/n/60476136-2](https://www.ipni.org/n/60476136-2) :

> Heyne made the collection in Orissa and coined the manuscript name Convolvulus orixensis (as seen from his hand-written annotation on a syntype specimen); Roth misread Heyne’s epithet as osyrensis and published the same. The publishing authors Romer and Schultes ascribed the name and the description together to: Roth … MSS. Therefore, Roth is the author of the species name (see the ICN Art. 46 Ex. 22)

Odisha is the modern name of Orissa. It’s a state in Eastern India.

Many many thanks all: @0x4372616967 and @pisum
Etymology of this epithet _osyrensis_ kept eluding me; thanks to you all for your time and inputs.

The content “Native of the East Indies, in Osyre, where it is called Mala-Erikaliga” shows up at many sites. However, the content in “Remarks” at [IPNI](https://www.ipni.org/n/60476136-2) seems to be a valid conclusion. Thanks @pisum for leading to this content.
