When the CV shows options sharing a same genus or family, it will show a “summary taxon” as the first option in the suggestion list. For instance, if the options are species in a shared genus, the summary taxon is just that genus. However, if CV provides suggestions, but genus and family(?) are not shared among results, no summary taxon is given. This is most common when it is uncertain or not confident.
The request is that when this happens, but options still share a greater taxon, that a shared taxon is still provided to reflect this. For instance, if I am posting a moth, and all the CV suggestions are not confident but all moths, it should provide an option of Lepidoptera. For plants, that might be Dicots, or Plantae. I imagine it would pick the nearest Order level, or Kingdom if it cannot find an Order agreement.
This would solve two things. First, especially new users feel forced to select a CV option, which leads to a lot of unrelated or wrong IDs. Having a more generic option like Insecta or Plantae would help this. Secondly, people like me with slow computers find the workflow a bit frustrating when CV has no good option. This is because cancelling CV, typing in our desired generic taxon (e.g. Lepidoptera), waiting for the index to search and match what you typed, and praying you don’t accidentally click partway through and reset the process takes more time than desired. Having a quick available greater taxon available more often would be a great boon!
It seems like a good improvement on the process overall, and I hope that can be recognized even if it wouldn’t impact your own workflow much personally.
