@jwidness I think moving security concerns about your app to a separate thread is overstepping your power as a moderator. Other people who write apps for iNaturalist aren’t able to tell people not to discuss possible security problems with their application..
I was about to move your post to a new topic as well, she beat me to it by literally a few seconds.
Giving moderators the power to move posts that raises questions about the security of application they create sets a really bad precedent for the security of the iNaturalist platform. People need to be able to freely discuss security and privacy issues regarding 3rd party apps, as well as issues with official iNaturalist software, and proposed feature requests.
I think splitting the topic was a good choice and I ssupport it. There’s a link in the original topic that links to the new topic, so nothing is hidden here. Everything’s above board. As Jane said, your topic was fairly broad and not specific to the viewer she built, and it’s a better fit for a new topic.
I agree that this is a good general topic for discussion. But discussing
is very much a separate topic, and much broader than the post about the extension you added it to. The topic is important, and it’s very reasonable to make it its own topic. I would have done the same as other mods, and mods do this (splitting a comment to its own post) reasonably frequently - it’s a common element of the job. Making your post its own topic actually increases forum participants’ ability to
as it has much higher visibility on the forum and the iNat homepage. The topic/comment would otherwise have been buried in a thread about a specific extension/app where it would have received much less attention.
