Wagtail is called трясогузка here, where “гуз” part comes from “гузно/гузка” – butt, bird is called buttshaker.
Here are a few from the top of my head.
Oh, and my family calls Double-Creasted Cormorants Batman Birds and Crested Ducks (breed) Princess Leia Ducks.
I also agree.
I think ‘‘yellow crowned warbler’’ would be better.
I’ve heard Butter Butt used for Green-winged Teal but not for the warbler.
I hear it used regularly for Yellow-rumped Warbler but wasn’t aware anyone was using the name for Green-winged Teal.
Somehow I doubt you’ll find any of those in Lake Wobegon.
Wobbegong in Lake Wobegon would keep me on shore for sure!
Same as @raymie
I’ve heard the name ‘‘butter butt’’ for the warbler, but not for the teal.
@karen5lund Actually, that silly lil’ nickname is actually pretty common.
Yeah, maybe it’s a local thing that I heard among duck hunters. I don’t see it used on the Web for the teal but definitely for the warbler.
Yeah.
I was delighted today when one of my observations was just ID’ed as “Yellow Fly of the Dismal Swamp”.
oh wow that’s an epic fly name!
You just haven’t been around enough bird nerds. I use the term “butter butt” for yellow-rumped warblers too.
My spider observation was just IDed as a Drumming Sword Wolf Spider. I researched and found that “drumming” refers to a behavior (tapping on dried leaves to woo the lady spiders). “Sword” is a name applied to all wolf spiders in the genus Gladicosa but I couldn’t find why.
Just remembered, the sexy shrimp. They are really fun to watch.
That’s hilarious. I was wondering why it was called that and found this answer online:
