I somehow didn’t get bitten by that backswimmer, only my brother did. I felt so lucky and like I was better than my brother for that, lol! But my brother is actually luckier than me in life so I am jealous of him!
I once was taking pictures when a mosquito landed on me. Unfortunately for it, it landed on my face, and I instantly felt it. That time I got lucky, though. Before that, while photographing, I got 4 mosquito bites in 2 days.
No don’t be jealous you could name a chickadee ![]()
Thanks but my brother’s accomplishments are always way better compared to me
I still don’t have information about when the PBS clip will be released, but just an update on the filming … I did get bitten - of course.
But the best thing was that one of the females literally starting giving birth on camera. She popped out 18 little baby snakes. Yes, for those that don’t know - not all reptiles lay eggs. Some snakes and lizards give birth to live young. Just as with their adult reputation, some of the little ones came out feisty and ready to attack. It was so cute!
Here’s a couple of them:

Had something very similar in our pool recently. I’m glad I didn’t touch it. Which is very much a rule I have for myself. I do not touch any wildlife intentionally. https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/390241455
I intentionally touch a lot of insects and I haven’ t been bitten by any of them. Just don’t touch it if it looks sketchy. That’s what I do, and a lot of the sketchy looking insects may actually be harmless, but like most of them are harmful.
caterpillar of course…
Caterpillars are generally cute though, there a particular one which I can find locally and lives on a plant which spends so much energy of flowers that it stops producing new leaves. So? Go to the top & eat the buds before they are ready to bloom.
- Bit by large dragonflies
- Stung by bumblebee
- Stung by Immigrant Pavement Ant
- Bitten by Snapping turtle
And more
caught me off guard. I too have been bitten by dragonflies, never pained that bad so when I made the list it just didn’t come to my mind. They are just cure and they look like they are screaming when they attempt to bite.
I’ve been stung plenty of times by various bees, wasps, and hornets, but not usually as result of handling them.
One time, however, I picked up my real camera, and unbeknownst to me there was a black Bald-faced hornet sitting on the handle that I grabbed. Holy cow! Most painful sting ever! (And my camera was in the house, not outside. That wasn’t fair.)
Do you know how at medical appointments they sometimes ask “how is your pain on a scale of 0 to 10?”
How about a scale of “a ladybug walked across my hand and it didn’t hurt at all” to “HOLY COW!! ! that hornet just stung my hand!!!”
I don’t know where scorpions, snakes and fire ants would fit on such a scale, because I’ve never experienced them, For which I am very grateful.
Not yet. Looking at your perspective, look at Mark Vins’ bite/sting pain index, you can find it.
Recently I were collecting treehoppers and an ant bit and then stung me; I pulled it mid sting so the formic acid got sprayed causing a scar on my thumb that in luckily only a few millimetres across.
I went for the treehoppers but the ants farm and protect them like cows, for the sweet honeydew. I id hoppers so they are of my interest, so I were collecting them, then they attacked. I didn’t stop collecting them even for the day, I collected atleast 5 more at that time after being stung.
And big grasshoppers with robust spines on their hind tibiae are as good as thorny bushes. You grab them and they will give you a cut with those.
I recently saw a Euconocephalus katydid and well… it bit me.
Once while I was going out to photograph some orchids, I felt something stinging my arm. I looked down and saw that it was a saddleback caterpillar! I was really scared because I thought that their sting is deadly. I’ve seen puss caterpillars too, but avoided them because they can actually be deadly (I think).
I’ve been bittin by damselflies before. I did not know they could bite! They don’t hurt all that much though.
