I’ve looked at old forum posts and there seems to have been a button allowing any user to add a new common name for a taxon, but this feature seems to have been removed. Do I have to have a specific status on iNaturalist in order to provide a new name for a taxon?

I still see it so I don’t think anything was removed.
The “add a name” button is not showing up for me in any tab on the Taxonomy page. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this?

No, just having a certain amount of activity. The specific details aren’t generally published to prevent gaming them given some instances of bad actors and common names.
I hope any submission is vetted first before actually going live.
If not, that sounds like a recipe for problems.
I do see it in some taxa that I am involved in, so it’s there.

You can ask for a common name to be removed. I have explained why, and the name has been scored thru. Still in the list on the taxon page but not displayed on obs.

Yep, I also where users have flagged a taxon for changes to address common names, mostly spelling or removal, but also for additions..
