A similar idea for bridge cameras, try a flash diffuser. I made one out of milk carton plastic and rubber band it to the end of my lens (Canon SX70). It has 2 benefits, knocks the intensity of the flash down so I have less chance of washing out the subject and moves the light source out to the end of the lens so the subject isn’t in the lens shadow.
