How do you say "ookow"?

I’ve come across some observations of ookow, an asparagaceous plant closely related to Brodiaea. Wikipedia doesn’t say how to pronounce it, and Wiktionary doesn’t even have an entry. Is it /ukau/, /ʊko/, or what?

Here in northern California, I have heard several people say, “ew-cow” like they had just seen a disgusting bovine. Neither syllable is stressed in my experience, but the first is sometimes slightly drawn out.
