How is South Florida defined in iNat?

Hi!

I’ve been working on a project using some observation datasets from iNaturalist as well as from a few other sources. I need to be consistent in how I’m identifying observations to regions, particularly South Florida, where my species of interest (monarch butterfly) is known to have a distinct population w/ some pretty interesting behaviors.

Does anyone know exactly how the ‘south Florida’ location tag in iNat is defined? I can see from looking at it that it passes in a straight line just south of St. Petersburg on the West and Melbourne on the East (see pic), but I’d love more information on how that specific boundary was designated.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

Thanks! I totally didn’t clock that.

@calebcam I think you are the creator of the tag. Would you mind letting me know how you picked the boundary (it seems totally reasonable to me, I just want to make sure I’m using a consistent definition in my non-iNat datsets).

Sorry also if there’s a better way to reach you - I’m new to the forums and still finding my way around :)

Best thing to do would be to message him directly on iNat, probably. See https://help.inaturalist.org/en/support/solutions/articles/151000170769

You can also just download all observations of interest from iNat and then filter to any geographic area that you wish outside of iNat.

Thanks! I have them downloaded - I’m just not sure of what definition I would l like to use for the region, so looking for a better understanding of what other people mean when they say ‘South Florida’ xD
