How many hours did you spend reading the forum?

Discord tells me I spent 22 hours and 9 minutes reading on the site, equivalent to reading through the Lord of the Rings.

Time well spent, I think.

I’ve spent 17 hrs, also equivalent to reading Lord of the Rings, which I have been doing recently, coincidentally!

21 h. I was surprised. But this site is always open in the background and I check it along with a few other forums so I guess I just get stuck reading enough times.

117 hours, which is equivalent to reading a book series that I’m hesitant to dive into. Ten-plus volumes of sprawling, mosaic-style storytelling which requires reading the whole thing before you get a mental picture of what’s going on?

Thank you; but I think that I’ll re-read The Hobbit, the Trilogy, The Silmarillion, The History of Middle-earth, and re-watch all of the films. And, I get all of the Professor’s descriptions of various plants.

(I always thought that athelas must smell something like California Sagebrush)

Not gonna look. Scared to find out…

175 hours!

After joining the fourm I quickly realized just how much there was to catch up on - still more to go.

Time well spent indeed.

Not the highest, but definitely not low: 59 hours.

I don’t know whether I should be reading more on here or less

Whatever amount you choose to read is the right amount!

If you haven’t already read it, you may enjoy Flora of Middle-Earth: Plants of J.R.R. Tolkien’s Legendarium

Ooh! I have lots of Tolkien tomes, but not that one. I do have the similar title The Plants of Middle-Earth, Dinah Hazell, Kent State Univ. Press, 2006.
(And despite spending far too much time on the forum and plenty of time identifying, I found time to reread Lord of the Rings for the umpteenth time..

I’ve spent 69 hours on the forum.

Ooh, count me in! I’m in the middle of rereading the Lord of the Rings for the 3rd time.

Yes, you win so far, as the only person I’ve seen with over 200 hours.

It’s an interesting situation, since iNaturalist only functions due to massive numbers of volunteers, but in the case of the forum, it appears that paid staff produces more forum time than passion alone (although I know you have passion as well, in addition to reading the forum as part of your job).

If we’re talking about middle earth anyway, I’ll just say: A wizard never spends too much time on the forum. Nor do they spend too little. They spend precisely as much time as they mean to!

I will say that we are social creatures (humans)

And reading the forum is basically (in social terms) spending time with your friends who share the same niche interest as you do (nature)

So don’t judge it. It’s a positive thing. It becomes “too much” if you start to get ranty, or if you start to annoy other users. Then it might be time for a break.

This is what my record on the forum looks like.
Maybe it’s an addiction, but it’s not to the injurious stage…

Too much is when you get the warning. Too many hearts, go away !

Back to IDs then

I’ve wondered, how much of iNatting is a busman’s holiday for staff?

88 hours, which is equal to the time spent reading the “The Game of Thrones Series”, which I was not going to do anyway. That’s 3 whole days of reading forum posts!
