Have entered close up photos of Torrey’s Wild Licorice flowers in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada but don’t know how to alert anyone to take a look and identify. Right now if anyone looks for this flower they don’t show up.
They show up fine for me when I search for that species - I won’t ID them since I’m not familiar with the species, but they should be visible to anyone who searches
What exactly do you mean by this? If I look through your observations, I can see your observations of Torrey’s wild licorice. If I do a search for Torrey’s wild licorice on the Explore or Identify tabs, I can very easily find your observations. Anybody who wants to find and identify Torrey’s wild licorice will be able to find them easily.
If you want to ask for an identifier’s help, you can find identifiers by searching the leaderboards to find which users have identified Torrey’s wild licorice the most. Just navigate to the species page and select ‘Leaderboard’ under ‘Top Identifier.’ To call somebody’s attention to a specific observation, you would then tag them in the comments of the observation. For example, you would type @calvertm if you wanted me to look at an observation. Feel free to test it out using my username.
As a note of etiquette / courtesy, please be mindful about when and who you ask to look at your posts. Some identifiers get several requests a day to look at specific observations and it can become distracting and disruptive for them. Try not to spam identifiers by tagging them excessively, we’re all just volunteering our time here :)
Some tips for being respectful to identifiers include:
- Give identifiers some time to find observations on their own before tagging them
- Check identifiers’ profiles to see if they’re okay with being tagged
- Check what regions an identifier prefers to work in to make sure they’re comfortable identifying in your region (I sometimes get tagged to look at observations in Mexico- I try my best to help but I’ve never been to Mexico and I don’t know anything about the species there)
- Add a short note in your comment so the identifier knows why they’ve been tagged (e.g. hello @calvertm, would you mind taking a look at this?).
A simple way to find out who you might @ to look at your observations is to go to the Explore page, type in the species (or genus) and a general location (like “Ontario”) and then peruse the list of Identifiers. Here’s what I see for this species in Ontario:
Thanks. They don’t show up for me when I search it. You saw them?
You can see them? They don’t show up for me so I thought no one could see them. I had to pick the see my own observations before I could see them so I thought no one else could. Hmmm.
Yes, I do see those names. I didn’t know if it was allowed to ask people to look, especially when I thought they could not see them.
@cirsium – A common problem is that the computer assumes you won’t want to see observations that you’ve already “reviewed,” observations you’ve worked on. Obviously, you’ve worked on your own observations so they don’t show up unless you change “Reviewed” to “Any” instead of the default “No.”
exactly where/how are you trying to find your own observations but not seeing them? The Explore page or Identify page?
Yes! If you’re looking for them in the Identify tab, make sure that you have the search filter ‘Reviewed’ set to ‘Any’ (it defaults to ‘No’). Your own observations usually get marked as reviewed and then they’re hidden from view unless you change that filter. I often forget that when I’m looking for my own observations and it trips me up.
There’s a bit more to it than this. I do a lot of identifying of plants in the West Indies, but that doesn’t mean I know all of them well. Fiddlewood, for instance, I know mainly by its fruit and would not be of any help with a specimen that was only leafy.
I don’t know where to do that.
I am looking up the plant in https://www.wildflowersearch.org/search?oldstate=elev%3A856%3Bgms%3A14%3Bgmc%3A44.489%2C-79.804%3Blocation%3AMinesing%2C+ON+L0L+1Y0%2C+Canada%3B&buttonName=none&hab=&Elev=&PlantName=licorice&S__34882.x=54&S__34882.y=37 which gives me a link to inaturalist. When I go to that link my observations for this flower do not show. Yes, I can see them if I click My Observations, but I thought only I could see them. Anyway, I have fixed the multiple entries and put all photos in one spot with sync on for location.
If you’re using the Identify tab: click on the box that says “Filters” next to the Species and Location search bars at the top left of the screen. This will show you lots of different filters you can use to edit your search results, they’re organized into three columns. In the right column, under the header “Reviewed,” you can choose the option that says “Any.” After that, you should be able to see your own observations.
Hopefully this photo uploads right and you can see it:
How to change whether the computer is showing you observations you’ve reviewed, or not? My responses are for the website.
In Identify, click on Filters. One options is Reviewed (any, yes, no).
In Explore, click on Filters, then on More Filters. You’ll find the same options of Reviewed (any, yes, no).
EDIT: @calvertm just showed you a picture of these options.
