Hi! I live in Southwest Michigan, and I love looking for jumping spiders in my back yard. I’m wondering if there’s some kind of shelter/area I could set up to attract jumping spiders. Does anyone have any tips?
Be a flightless fruit fly and you’ll see plenty of them! ![]()
Anyway, I suggest planting native plants to create a nice patch of native ecosystem - I find plenty of jumping spiders in these areas. In southwest Michigan, I suggest a “microprairie“ - we need all the silphiums, bluestems, and coneflowers we can get!
No, mostly one. You probably won’t be there to see the others, (especially if you are flightless).
I don’t know how to attract them. I find plenty on my decking and screened in porches. They do like crevices nearby. The screens get many moths resting overnight. I don’t see that there is a plant preference other than plants and flowers that draw in prey for them.
My best advice is a quote attributed to Thoren Oakenshield (JRR Tolkien) “There’s nothing like looking when you’re trying to find something”
It depends on your local species. In my locality there are some species that like wide strappy leaves like agapanthus, some like walls and tree trunks, and some like rocky areas. Many of them I don’t see often enough to be sure what they like.
You might get an idea by looking at local jumping spider photos on iNat and checking out the background.
