How to make a DIY database for nature Logs

Hi all!
I want to make a DIY database for my bird nest logs. I am looking for a free platform to use to make this database. I will mostly use this database for logging my bird nesting data that I gather out in the field. I have heard of NestWatch, but I am not a huge fan of it. I just want to create my own simple database for logging all my bird nesting behaviors that I find I log in the field. I would also like to be able to share the data from this DIY database to other birders in my area.

Please let me know if you have any recommendations on how to create this database. All feedback will be much appreciated!

what do exactly you want to record / capture in your database? you could do something as simple as a list, captured in and shareable via a Google Sheets spreadsheet or something similar.

I want to record all behaviors, young seen in nest, adult birds present, nest types, etc. Basically every detail I can add to my bird nesting data logs.

are you intending to record images and locations?

Yes, if possible.

do you need it to be searchable? (for example, nests in a particular part of the city by a particular type of bird)

No, but now that you mention that it sounds like a good feature.

ok… last questions:

  • how many nests do you expect to keep track of in any given year? over, say, 10 years?
  • what don’t you like about NestWatch?

I used to participate in a volunteer raptor nest survey for the local parks for a number of years. I used Excel files because it allowed me to be very organized. You can keep separate files or separate tabs for different nests. There are a lot of options. I used formulas to calculate how long I spent at a nest (end time minus start time). I kept photos and maps that I drew in separate folders.

The local parks used to upload the data we collected into NestWatch. After that particular volunteer project was eliminated, I still monitored some nests because it was very enjoyable. I used the Excel spreadsheets to record my data, and then entered it all into NestWatch when a nest failed or all the young had fledged.

The value of using NestWatch is that the local parks can see what is happening on their land. I like to be able to contribute to that since the naturalists can’t do everything. They appreciate the entries I make into iNaturalist and use that data.

I think NestWatch was made for smaller birds with shorter nesting cycles (compared to raptors) and nests that can be peered into (for number of eggs, etc.). But, it can be used for birds like raptors, too. You just have to adapt to it.
