How to recover old taxon photos

At times well-meaning individuals change taxon photos and do something that needs fixing. For example, “Reptilia” is often changed to include one or other photos people like. This isn’t an issue for me until those changes remove one of the underlying Orders from display. That is, my strategy is to keep the taxon page showing as many of the taxa immediately beneath it…in this example there are three Orders.

My question is: how can I go back and find the previous picture after it has been changed?

The history exists, and is great to see that changes have been made, but it lists the photo ID, not the observation from which it came. Sometimes there is a clickable link that gets me to the photo and then to the observation, but this isn’t universal. It would be much easier to recover those photo if links to observations were universally provided.

You might be able to access them through the Internet Archive: https://archive.org/web/web-advancedsearch.php

Taxon photos are a recurring issue…

You could request the taxon photos to be locked. As for Homo sapiens, cats and dogs.

Take the photo number and add it to the end of inaturalist.org/photos/
