How to tag an observation of a diseased bird?

A Cassin’s finch at one of my feeders has some really nasty looking feet/legs and I wanted to tag it as diseased but don’t know how.

You just type whatever you want in the tags field. It’s just a string/text value.

I guess my question should be what tag would be best to help researchers. :slightly_smiling_face:

Ah. Well, that’s possibly variable between the searchers (eg. One is looking for “avian disease” another is looking for “bird foot disorders”, etc).

You could put multiple tags, and/or you could add the observation to a few projects (I know there are a few for diseases, etc in wildlife).

Here are a few that may be of interest:

The most helpful thing might be to create a separate observation for the disease, but if you don’t know what it is it might be hard to identify.

sounds like a leg mite (family Knemidokoptidae)

that’s what i try to do, although people often ID these kinds of observations incorrectly, seemingly ignoring my ID and notes: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/151363940.

To avoid mistakes, maybe you should upload a close-up of the legs and make it the 1st image? And draw a big red arrow pointing to the disease?

i think people should just read the comments and look at existing IDs.

Forgot to add: You could also make your own project, and then advertise it here:

I did upload a closeup of the legs but I couldn’t figure out a way to make it the first image.

Are you on the website or the mobile app?

On the website, go to the observation, then edit, then there is a “Re-order photos” link on the right under the photos. 0 is the position for the first pic, and you may have to adjust the other numbers as well

On Android, go go to the observation, then edit, then tap the photo you want to be first. Tap the 3 dots in the upper right and chose “Make 1st”.

On iPhone…I no longer have one, so I am sorry, but I don’t know how to do it there.
