How to tell if someone else's observation is wild or captive?

Hello kind friends,

I have looked and looked and I just cannot work out how I can easily tell if someone else’s observation is wild or captive.

Can you please direct me where on the observation record I can see this information?

Thank you so much!

Nat

Hi! Welcome to the Forum!

Personally, I just look at the surroundings in the photo, or how the animal (if it is an animal) might be acting in the photo.

Is there any specific observations you are thinking of?

If someone’s observation has been marked as captive or cultivated (by the observer or an identifier), a grey ribbon with the word “Casual” will show in the preview or at the top of the observation page next to the ID.

Welcome, @TawnyFrogmouth! I’m always happy to see a tawny frogmouth.

If the observation has been marked as captive, it will be Casual. If it shows as Needs ID, it hasn’t been marked captive (yet). Depending on how you are accessing iNat, you can see the field in the Data Quality Assessment “Organism is wild”:

If there is a red X instead of a green tick, the observation has been marked as captive by someone. (This example shows the downward thumb in grey because I was the one who marked it as captive.)

Thank you! Very helpful

Oh I feel silly! I just didn’t scroll down far enough! Thank you for taking the time to explain that.
