They’re just SO smart, cute and playful!
They build cosy homes… And they want to bring you inside!Have you watched My Octopus Teacher? So good!
Mine is Stigmochelys pardalis, Leopard Tortoise.
Carolina parakeet or passenger pigeon imo
Yes! It’s my favorite film on Netflix!
That’s from where I got the idea of pointing a filger at the octopuS LOL ![]()
Peregrine falcon!
Others include American bison, moose, black bear, elk, New England cottontail, red squirrel, Baltimore oriole, Allosaurus, luna moth, Atlantic salmon, and mountain lion.
What that? You’re saying I should’ve just written kingdom Animalia? Hmm, perhaps.
“I’d like to be under the sea in an octopus’s garden in the shade…”
Not sure that I have a favourite animal as such, but I definitely seem to have developed a mild obsession for springtails - observing, not identifying. :-) I took a long time to really realise they existed, but once I did, I can’t believe how many I see around!
I mean, how can you resist that mohawk?
And globulars are always cute…
I don’t know if I’d call them favorites, but I’m fond of rock-boring mollusks, especially pholadids - humble bivalves which tear down continents and, while they’re at it, create protected hidey-holes for other species.
Here’s one, Parapholas calva:
Laminella sanguinea, the sanguine litter snail, is a species of ground snail in genus Laminella, family Amastridae. It is one of the 22 surviving species in the family, out of 325 described specie.
The species is endemic to the Waianae Range in Oahu. Known surviving wild populations have always been extremely small, probably having never exceeded 20 individuals in recent years. Fortunately, a captive population of this species does exist so it is not under imminent threat of extinction.
The species also likes to cover its bright red shell with dirt and its own feces, as a method of camouflage. Sadly it is ineffective against the invasive predator(s) that have driven it to near extinction.
favourite living animal is definitely the spotted hyena, for extinct its between hatzegopteryx and basilosaurus.
Scoliid wasps. And just wasps in general. Absolutely adorable little critters ![]()
I can’t help but agree!
Nice!
I’ve been pondering this one: do I have “a” favorite animal overall? In the thread, What is your favorite bird? I chose Tropicbirds. They are seabirds, hunting fish and squids like terns, i.e., by plunge diving, and nest on sea cliffs or offshore islands; yet on my trip to French Polynesia a few years ago, I saw them flying below the canopy in the rainforest, far up in a valley. I don’t see any references online as to why they do that.
But with the thread asking about a favorite animal – across all phyla – would I venture to say that Tropicbirds are a favorite overall? I never thought in those terms; I always considered “favorite bird,” “favorite mammal,” and so on. How could I compare mammals with butterflies, or fishes with flatworms?
All of the Corvids. Literally undergoing the stone age just like humans, crows are one of the smartest birds I know about. Those little bastards are gonna take over the world one day I swear.
And I, for one, welcome our new crow overlords.
Absolutely! Pretty sure they are the only birds who can sense that a cat is being fed, descend in their inky black wings, scare the cat away and eat its food! A crow, named Kagdu, (@austin_ajit will understand the meaning hopefully), comes everyday to do the exact same things to our cats. To show that we like it also, we give it some food as well so it doesn’t eat the cats’ food. ![]()
I’m quite fond of the Pleasing Fungus Beetles…
