Identificación de encinos (Quercus spp.) en México

¿Conocen literatura para aprender a identificar Quercus spp.? Debido a su diversidad en México es un poco difícil hacerlo.

Saludos! Vivo en Yucatán, así que Quercus son raras aquí. A veces encuentro información sobre plantas locales a través de CICY, que es nuestro repositorio local. CICY tiene info sobre Q. oleoides.

Un centro local podría tener información sobre otras especies, además de la UNAM, por supuesto. Mientras tanto:

You’re right, Mexico has many many species of oaks, (not to mention understudied hybrids), and in fact is the global center of Quercus diversity! I’ve also been searching for good references, since it’s difficult to identify oaks when there are so many species to go through, even in a single State!

  1. I have heard there is a (somewhat expensive) guide to 100 oaks of Mexico, if you can borrow or buy it, I’d recommend it since specialized flora is almost always preferable to general literature on a genus:

There are general guides out there like oaks of the world, but they’re not as user-friendly by region of Mexico, and presuppose that you already know which species are in the area, though they are quite useful in conjuction with searching oaks in the same state (or the whole country if you’re skeptical the area has already been well-botanized on iNat).

Tienes razón, México tiene muchísimas especies de robles (por no mencionar los híbridos poco estudiados), ¡y de hecho es el centro mundial de la diversidad de Quercus! Yo también he estado buscando buenas referencias, ya que es difícil identificar robles cuando hay tantas especies, ¡incluso en un solo estado! Aquí les comparto algunos recursos que encontré para identificar robles (que también me servirán de referencia):

  1. He oído que existe una guía (algo cara) de 100 robles de México. Si pueden conseguirla prestada o comprarla, se la recomiendo, ya que la flora especializada casi siempre es preferible a la literatura general sobre un género.

  2. Existen guías generales como “Robles del Mundo”, pero no son tan fáciles de usar por región de México y presuponen que ya se conocen las especies de la zona. Sin embargo, son bastante útiles para buscar robles en el mismo estado (o en todo el país si dudan de que la zona esté bien documentada botánicamente en iNat).
