Image is missing. This was a research grade observation - second time this has happened.

Just to clarify, this is the second time this has happened to you in general or the second time with this specific observation?

Second time in general - last time was a bird, that someone was able to find so that I could reload.

for what it’s worth, this is the photo file stored the media server: [https://inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/47221288/original.jpeg](https://inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/47221288/original.jpeg).

the photo record ([https://www.inaturalist.org/photos/47221288](https://www.inaturalist.org/photos/47221288)) doesn’t exist at this point. so it’s not possible to simply link that photo record back to the observation. but you could download the photo file from the server and add that back to the observation, although the metadata is gone at this point, unless you have your own copy of the original file.

it may be worth noting that the last update date captured for the observation is `"updated_at":"2022-10-31T18:58:03.539-05:00"`.

I reloaded it - the date etc are still in the observation. I have the original, but it’s not organized well enough to find easily. I may need to start doing that.
Thanks

I’ve had five or six images disappear from about that many observations over the past couple years **after they already reached RG.** For me it only happens to recently uploaded files. Fortunately I keep most of my files for a few weeks before dumping them.

next time you see this happen, please provide an example. i think it would be really hard to investigate potential problems like this without knowing more about particular cases where this actually happened. looking at sc\_beetles’s observation vs some of your recent observations, i _suspect_ that there are possibly different causes for your problems.

it may also be worth noting that beyond possible bugs in the system, there are various ways that folks might accidentally delete/disassociate a photo on an observation (ex. deleting a photo record that is tied to multiple observations thinking it will be deleted from only one of the observations, unchecking a photo when editing an observation in the web, etc.).

Will do. It really wasn’t much of a problem for me with those few observations so I really never thought about reporting it. It is entirely possible that there could be more than one cause. I’m aware of what happens when you delete photos from duplicated observations and actually prefer to upload separate obs even when using the same photos for that very reason but who knows, it has been so minor of a problem for me that to be very honest I hadn’t paid that much attention to it. I’ll let you know if it happens again.
