Exactly what it says on the tin. What’s your relationship to iNat’s leaderboards? Are you a top identifier or observer of anything? Where do you stand in your local area? Or do you usually just forget that they exist entirely?

I’m currently one of the top identifiers of _Mischocyttarus flavitarsis._ Admittedly I’ve only made 60 ID’s for that species but it still got me on the top identifier list.

Happy to be the top identifier of hoverflies in Australia!! [Observations · iNaturalist](https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=6744&taxon_id=49995&view=identifiers). Was quite involved in my rank on the leaderboard back when I was more of a novice identifier, but I don’t really pay too much attention to it nowadays.

This also puts me as the 10th top fly (Diptera) identifier in Australia

The Explore view has a count of the numbers of identifiers and observers for whatever set of organisms is currently specified. If you click on either of those you get the top 500.

Pick a rare enough taxon (some have less than 60 observations) and you can be the top identifier with rather fewer identifications. In the extreme I’m the joint top identifier for _Malva_ x _columbretensis_ (1 observation). I’ve been going through some _Malva_ and _Malope_ species (and observations languishing at genus) and that’s got me to the top of the leaderboard for some of them.

It’s a bit unfair considering where I am and how long I’ve been here, and some of the other places I’ve been, but I’m the top identifier for a few species, and am the top observer (in a few cases the only observer) of a few other species. There isn’t a way to do a universal leaderboard check though, so it’s kinda a pain to find which ones this applies to. Here are some, but there may be others:

OTOH we are ‘punished’ for doing a taxon sweep of a monotypic Genus by flying high on the leaderboard. That is plodding not ‘leader’

Since I have been working on group with tonnes of species which have never been identified, I have got over 1,000 first ids now and also several other leaderboards like both species of Zedochir and the genus itself, the genera Melandeva, Messena & Parandes, almost every species of Heteronotus and the genus itself, the list can be so long if included first ids many of which are still not over taken, in fact a majority of them.

For observer, that is another story.

I upload not that much and have a backlog of images to upload.

This should be a small list, apart from my own ids of my own species, especially hoppers which I am good at.

BTW I want to have the ability to write there (where they write [taxon] is a [rank] of [general classification] with x observation(s) or the wikipedia summary is) so that I can write my notes there!!!

I also have this neat little combo for _Populus x rouleauiana_. Though it is a unicorn of a species, so it’s uncommon. Hard to know you’re even looking at it.

Apparently I’m the top observer (of everything) by observation count and species count in Santa Cruz County, Arizona (USA). It helps to live in a small, fairly rural county and focus on species-rich categories like plants and arthropods. It also helps to be obsessive :)

@earthknight — “There isn’t a way to do a universal leaderboard check” is exactly what got to me too, so I ended up building one. It’s a small Shiny app that sweeps a user’s most-observed taxa and shows, for each one, the world total, your share of it, and the top 3 globally — so the ones where you’re actually #1 just fall out of the list instead of having to be hunted down taxon by taxon. There’s a role switch, so it runs either as observer or as identifier: [https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/inaturalist-species-ranking-rarities-open-shiny-app-r-by-andreferrari/82907](https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/inaturalist-species-ranking-rarities-open-shiny-app-r-by-andreferrari/82907)

Running it on myself as observer, 10 species came back where I’m the top observer worldwide. The top few:

| Species | Obs. | % of world |
| --- | --- | --- |
| _Leptotila verreauxi_ | 555 | 3.9% |
| _Didelphis aurita_ | 278 | 12.6% |
| _Tachyphonus coronatus_ | 273 | 6.7% |
| _Aramides saracura_ | 204 | 7.0% |
| _Euphonia pectoralis_ | 140 | 7.4% |
| _Sapajus nigritus_ | 133 | 2.6% |

No rare-taxon shortcut involved — every one of those is a common, widespread species. It’s just that nearly everything I post comes from a single Atlantic Forest site in Santa Teresa, Espírito Santo, Brazil, recorded over and over with camera traps and daily walks. Which says more about how thinly this forest is still sampled than about me.
