While uploading two fairly similar photos of the same species at the exact same location, I noticed that CV got the id right for both, but for first one, the correct species was ‘not expected nearby’ and for the second one the correct species was the only suggestion. This species is not well documented from this area, so I’m not surprised that it’s flagged ‘not expected nearby’ but it should be consistent across observations.
Are you certain the second observation had a location entered when you got an ID suggestion? I suspect it wasn’t, so iNat was only going by visual similarity. If I submit that photo and don’t add any location, I see:
As far as I can tell, splendid dottyback shouldn’t be expected near by there at all, see the geomodel: https://www.inaturalist.org/geo_model/136346/explain (note that this might change by the time you click on the link, a new model should be out soon).
Thanks for looking. They definitely had the same exact location when I experienced this issue, but the CV suggestions are consistent now so it looks like the updated model has fixed it.
