Can you name the story

Oh, gosh, I do not remember the name or author of that short story! It was probably in the 1970s or 1980s and likely in a science fiction anthology. I’m sorry, because it was imaginative and really almost poetical and very touching. I recall they were astounded that any life could exist in such a low density state as the planet’s surface (which they considered to be up above the ‘atmosphere’ of their world). To paraphrase, …It was beyond imagining how such wispy, ephemeral beings could exist. And how sad to see the ruined cities and realize the loss of (our) art and poetry…
