When I upload a previously-taken image with no metadata and choose a date, iNat puts in the time that I submitted it. I could maybe see if it was today’s date, even though I would want a way to turn that off, but if I’m choosing a date in the past, I never ever want it to put in a false time. I’ve been trying to note “time is correct” for the ones I realized and changed but would love to find a way to prevent this.

I agree that when entering a date manually, nothing ought to populate the time field automatically. The way it is, it must be manually deleted each time you select a date. It’s only one extra click per date entered, but it can get tedious when entering a lot of observations, and since it’s rare for anyone to care about the time of observations anyway (and there’s no DQA for “wrong time”), a lot of people just don’t bother to delete it.
Thanks. Yes, if I notice it, but I’d prefer to not have to fix the mistake and am asking how to prevent this as to me it’s a bug for the system to be automatically putting in fake times.
So should I submit this as a bug since it is automatically entering incorrect times and there’s no way to prevent that? I don’t think that preventing the system purposely entering incorrect data should be a feature request as it’s just plain wrong.
To me, it inserting incorrect dates is a bug, in part because I can’t think of any reason why that would be purposeful. Most of the time when this is an issue for me I do not want to exclude the time, but would want to enter the time if i had it, but I would never ever want it to automatically put in a seemingly-legitimate incorrect time. A feature request would be to always have it ask if I want the submission time to be the observation time, or even to leave it blank if I don’t enter it, unless it’s getting the observation time from image metadata. If someone tried looking at diel activity, the results would be wildly inaccurate because of this.

No, this is not an image metadata issue but the system putting in incorrect times when I choose a date. As in I cropped a screenshot from a video from a week ago, so no metadata, but when I upload an observation today the system inexplicably inserts the current/submission time… for something from a week ago.
So is there a way to change this to a bug report or should I resubmit as such?
as noted by bouteloua above, this shouldn’t really be a bug report as it isn’t a bug; whether or not you agree with the behaviour (and I don’t either, I think the time should just be left blank as well), it’s not something that’s happening due to a glitch or error in the code or something
so if you’d like, you can submit a feature request instead
