Is there a way to stop the website from jumping to the phone app?

When accessing the inaturalist web site from my phone, it is constantly throwing me into the app.

I use the web site from my phone when i need to do something not available in the app, and it is aggravating to be thwarted like that.

A particular example is if I go to my profile on the site (to look up who my friends are), it throws me into the app where that info is not available (or at least it’s very hard to find).

This is just a single example, i have lots more situations where I’m kicked off the site and into the app.

Is there a way to stop this behavior?

What your phone should be doing is to pop up a message stating

“Open in iNaturalist. Would you like to leave Firefox to view this content?”

There’s a checkbox for “Always open links in apps”.

Then the option to Cancel or Open.

Perhaps you clicked the checkbox and now it’s not giving you the option to Cancel or Open.

That’s standard default behavior for phones (and tablets) when you go to a browser page that you also have an app for. It’s not something specific to iNat.

On Android see if this works:

  • settings > apps > (look for the 3 dot, top right corner) > default apps > opening links > select the app you wanna toggle off (ask or don’t open)

On Apple see if this works:

  • Settings > Apps > Default Apps > {App Type} > {App Name} > {Link Type} > disable “Open”

If those exact pathways don’t work it’ll be something similar and a quick online search will provide the exact pathway.

what kind of device are you using?

Thanks. I am definitely not seeing that. I use chrome on android.

This worked perfectly! Thanks!

Glad to hear it.

For me, using Firefox in Android, I had to go to Settings in the Firefox browser and disable “Open links in apps”. I hate the layers and layers of complexity in everyday devices.
