# Join us for World Ocean Day ReefBlitz Event

As we approach June and **World Environment Day (5th)** and **World Oceans Day (8th)** it is a great opportunity to encourage people to explore their surroundings and learn about species.

We have advertised two events for World Oceans Day and this is an update

[31 May- World Ocean Day ReefBlitz information and training](https://www.facebook.com/events/490688616140592)

We have reached over 6,400 people and so far 64 responses

1-8 June- World Ocean Day Marine Life Surveys

**How you can be involved and share knowledge**

1. Join the online training on 31 May
2. Plan an outdoor or ocean trip between 1 and 8 June and take photos and record your observations
3. Encourage your family, friends or networks to join the fun
4. Consider your sustainability and reduce or offset impacts

**Background**  
iNaturalist if the largest Citizen science project in the World with almost 100 million observations of almost 380,000 species by 2,167,000 observers  
In Australian there are over 3,585,000 observations of 44,800 species by 47,338 observers  
[In the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area there are 31,202 observations of 3920 species by 1564 observers](https://inaturalist.ala.org.au/observations?project_id=90553)  
Are you surprised that less than 1% of Australia’s observations are from the GBR region?  
Did you know that the number one observed species is a Green Sea Turtle

Thanks Susan- here is a report of our first iNaturalist ReefBlitz held from 1-8 June 2022 in the Great Barrier Reef, Australia. The activity involved 29 observers, 105 identifiers, 33 sites, 1,396 observations of 409 species. The majority of species were fish. There were many protected, threatened and rare species recorded.
