Kangaroo mouse in NorCal

I live in Orland, California. Tonight, on late night drive in the country, I came across several Kangaroo mice crossing the road. I have lived here for 32 years and I’ve never seen them here before! After a quick search on Google, I found that they are only in Nevada and Eastern California. From what I’ve read, they are on the decline to drought. Can anyone clue me in? Are there normally Kangaroo mice in Northern CA?

Maybe they were kangaroo rats (Dipodomys genus), not kangaroo mice (Microdipodops genus)? There are a bunch of Dipodomys and some of them range through California’s Central Valley.

They’re related to kangaroo mice, look very similar, occupy a similar niche, and have a similar way of moving.

Thank you! I did not think to search for kangaroo rats in my query! They did seem very large for mice!

They were still a pleasant surprise!
