Description of problem :

Step 1: Open https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/83090772

Step 2: Select Life Stage: adult (or any other stage)

Step 3: Loading circle icon displays for a few seconds then disappears. Life stage is still not set.

I know this happens with other observations too!

I forced a reindex and it’s showing now.

Which, I should note, doesn’t sove the underlying issue, but I suspect it was more of a glitch than a consistent bug. But if you come across another one, please let us know.

Nevermind. Looks like I was able to reset the observation by toggling it to Casual and back with the DQA, after which I was able to make the annotation stick.

What should we do if we meet it again? It’s happening pretty often to have a need to be fixed. I found one where everything but “organism” was working, voting helped, but it’s kinda weird to do it each time.

Just don’t do anything and either post here or email help@inaturalist.org. It’d be best if we can look at ones that haven’t been “fixed”.

Here https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/86173727 I first added all annotations possible, but on organism it stopped loading, when reloading page life stage disappeared and now new annotations are not going through.

Hmm. I tried adding Evidence of Presence and nothing worked. Then I added Cannot be Determined to Sex and the annotaitons you added showed up. Do you see them now?

(I deleted my Sex annotation)

Yes! It’s weird.

Description of problem (please provide a set of steps we can use to replicate the issue, and make as many as you need.):

Step 1: Annotate a bunch of observations, I’ve been doing Alive/Dead, EoP, and Life Stage, I’m not sure if it happens when just doing one type of annotation.

Step 2: Some of the annotations won’t “stick” to the observation. I will select an annotation either with identify keyboard shortcuts or clicking the dropdown menus, it will show the little “loading” animation, and then it will go back to being empty.

This usually does happen on most observations and it will fix itself in a few seconds or with a page refresh, but a very small number will not stick at all no matter how many times I try. Interestingly, some of them will stick (for example, A/D and EoP will stick, but Life Stage will not).

I’m not sure if other people trying to annotate these will get them to stick, but at least I can’t do it myself. I assume this is some indexing issue, or maybe some database desyncing issue where it’s registered as filled in but not displaying. In either case, I tried annotating the linked observations a couple weeks ago and I still can’t get them to stick.

Please check https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/life-stage-annotation-not-saving-on-specific-observation/24021/ for those that won’t ever stick.

Ah thank you! I had looked if anyone else was having the same problem but I guess I didn’t search hard enough :P Should I post these links there or leave them here?

I’ll merge these posts to that thread.

Yeah, looks like the same problem. I added a Male Sex annotation (which I then removed) and the Life Stage annotation showed up.

Ah ok, should I report new ones I find here or should I add and remove an annotation like that to reindex it?

It would be best if our devs coudl look at one that wasn’t “fixed” this way, so please don’t do anything to them at the moment. I’ll see if we can look at them today.

OK, we think this has to do witih immediate reindexing not happening when an annotation is added and we’ll take a further look. We don’t need to keep any more of these “unfixed” so you can force them to reindex if you want by faving and unfaving or adding and removing a vote in the Data Quality Assessment.

Kk! Sounds great :)
