I just created a collection project, and only three of my observations populated there, when I have several others that would fit. Am I limited to how many of my own I can post there until others join? If I am not limited, why does my project not show up in the projects drop-down menu when I try to add a particular observation to my project?

Thanks :)

Observations are added automatically to collectional projects, you can’t add them manually, check which settings do you have in the project, check which place is used, etc.

Thanks. I did check the settings, and the locations of the observations that didn’t populate are correct for the project. That’s why I posted here. I can’t figure it out. I posted the observations the same way on the ones that did populate, as the ones that didn’t.

I see that the place you used has weird borders, it seems some your obs are too north for it, right on the edge.

Ohhh… Yes, I am in an area that gets close to what could be considered NE Florida by some who don’t actually live here. For those of us who live here, this is definitely North Central Florida. Hmm… Not sure what to do about that. Where do you see this border? Where can I access that map?

In the project description you can click on the place and there will be a map and species list. You may find another kml file or draw the area as you’d prefer and create a new place.

The easiest thing to do was just change it to ‘Florida’. Thank you so much for your help.

You can add more than one location to your collection if one location doesn’t cover the area you want. I didn’t see your project before you changed it to all of Florida, but I guess you used this location: [https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place\_id=150725](https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?place_id=150725) You can start with this location and add additional counties to cover the rest of the area you want. Here is a project I’m working on where you can see I used a ton of locations: [https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/south-central-us-ecoregions](https://www.inaturalist.org/projects/south-central-us-ecoregions) I’m going to teach myself how to make places so I can make my borders are more accurate.

maybe you can download all the kml files defining the border and merge them with a gis program into a new unique kml file? just thinking aloud.

Carrie previously said that you can’t create places that have more than [500000](https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/temporary-freeze-on-large-places-life-list-updates-and-taxon-changes-during-april-22-may-4/11516) observations, though it seems like the current limit is [200000](https://github.com/inaturalist/inaturalist/blob/9b1fe59c875a86a2f40a20d0401709c04a2141bf/app/models/place.rb#L199). Under either limit there are too many observations in that ecoregion to create a new place for the whole thing.
From iNat’s perspective, it’s much better to piece together existing places than create large new ones.

Also new smaller created places could be used in other projects as well, so it’s win-win.

That makes sense. I will try to do that. I’m still learning my way around how to do it, but I agree. It would be better. Perhaps I should do it by county.

Thank you for providing that link showing what iNat has for North Central Florida. That map is not correct as we see it living in this area. North Central Florida does not go as south as Orlando. That is Central Florida, and NCFL goes much further north than this map per iNat. … I decided to just list the counties that are included in true North Central Florida; Alachua, Marion, Union, Gilchrist, Levy, Putnam, Bradford, and Clay. It should work well for my purposes doing it this way, but if you know of an easy way for me to do a mile radius drawing for my project, that would even be better. Google maps has that tool, but I’m not seeing it on the iNat map. Perhaps I’m not looking in the right place?

Yes, I know about the limit. I’m going to make smaller places and put them together using the project. I’m just too busy right now to dive into learning how to do gis and what a kml file is. Unless someone wants to do it for me?

kml is just a file format, one of those used for maps, it probably saves dots with latitude/longitude. I believe you can use Google Earth to create it, but I only used Yandex maps.

I’m right there with you on that! After experimenting with the settings, I found that most of the observations I want are within one county, Alachua County, so I changed the name of my project. However, being able to draw a circle radius would really get me what I originally wanted. Perhaps iNat will enable that capability at some point.

I figure out how to draw the area I want on the map.

Apparently, someone had previously drawn a rectangle naming it North Central Florida, which is what threw mine off. I had to create a new one. Here are the two side by side…
[https://www.inaturalist.org/places/search?utf8=✓&q=North+Central+Florida&commit=Search](https://www.inaturalist.org/places/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=North+Central+Florida&commit=Search)

Now my question is … How do I unsubscribe from the ‘North Central Florida’ that is incorrect, but still showing up on my dashboard updates tab? When I click on that map and scroll to the bottom, I see no ‘unsubscribe’, it is only prompting me to ‘add’ more locations. … The updates I am getting on my dashboard home screen are from the incorrect mapped area.

Scroll to the bottom of this page and you will see this is the map that ‘austinsmith’ did, but the coordinates do not sync with iNat’s about page for North Central Florida. How to I unsubscribe 'austinsmith’s incorrect map?
