In order to separately track this issue as it pertains to the Discord platform, as background, first read my earlier bug report that treated this as a broad issue affecting multiple social media platforms https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/social-media-previews-no-longer-work/77159 and is solved now for at least some of them.
Facebook, BlueSky, and WhatsApp — see https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/link-previews-no-longer-being-generated-on-whatsapp/77610 — are the social media platforms I know of so far that are currently working, but Discord and others may need individual attention to make them work as well.
Can you include examples of what you are expecting to see and what you are experiencing instead?
Sure. As per https://forum.inaturalist.org/t/social-media-previews-no-longer-work/77159/6 when a user links my profile in a Discord conversation https://www.inaturalist.org/people/benarmstrong Discord should generate an embed preview and it attach it to that user’s message. Here’s one from several years ago for my own profile as it appeared on that date:
Similarly, when a user posts a link to an observation like https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/346061535 the page’s meta tag has <meta content="https://inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/630757989/large.jpg" property="og:image"> and therefore that image https://inaturalist-open-data.s3.amazonaws.com/photos/630757989/large.jpg should be attached to the user’s message, along with a title and a link back to the iNaturalist observation within the embed. That embed is no longer generated and added to the user’s message.
Here’s an example of a different previewed observation that was linked by a member in the iNaturalist Discord server on March 19, 2026. Ever since some time late on March 21, 2026, such previews are no longer being generated in any of our channels by Discord.
We’re still working on this issue.
Unfortunately, Discord is behaving differently than other actors, so we can’t exclude that we won’t be able to reactivate previews.
Link previews no longer being generated on Mastodon, either.
Discord previews should be working now.
A fix for Mastodon was also implemented - could you confirm please?
