Hi, for years whenever I added new observations the location transferred automatically from the photo to the observation, but now all of a sudden it stopped adding the location (even though the photos still have location metadata, it just doesn’t transfer). How can I fix this?
It’s hard to troubleshoot without more information about your phone type, iNat app or upload method, and photo metadata.
Have you confirmed whether the photos on your phone still have the location embedded in the photo? This is different than what you see in the Google Photos app, for example, if you use Google Photos.
You can test this by uploading one of the affected photos to a site like https://jimpl.com/ and seeing if location info is attached.
It doens’t load the location when I upload the observation to jimpl.com, which is weird because it shows up in the data in my gallery, thanks! I’ll fix it somehow
This is usually due to Android OS (or Google Photos, but I think it’s the OS) not giving the GPS data to iNat if the photo is not saved to your device. Try downloading the photo in Google Photos, then sharing to iNat, and let us know if it works.
I’ve seen a few emails about this in the past few days, I wonder if something changed in a recent Android update.
Sharing the photos from google photos sill doesn’t transfer location data, I’d just use the app (location data is transferred there) but I can only add one observation at a time in the app instead of multiple at a time like on browser. That also seems to be broken because from what I can read your’re supposed to be able to add multiple at a time
Same problem here. I have photos taken with my Samsung Galaxy s23 that have location metadata that doesn’t load when I attempt to upload them using my phone’s Chrome browser to upload on the desktop site. This has been a problem on and off for several weeks.
Which app are you using? Inat “Classic” only lets you upload one obs at a time, but inat “Next” lets you upload multiples at once.
After a very recent update to my Samsung S23 I had to reset camera app - permissions - location back to Use precise location because the update switched it to approximate location. Try that?
