Currently, the header search box on iNat’s website is not “open” by default - you have to click on the magnifying glass icon to open it thusly: ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex016/uploads/inaturalist/original/2X/f/fccea2014f51d19b32e7f8e60233d252cc609cb6.png) to: ![image](https://us1.discourse-cdn.com/flex016/uploads/inaturalist/original/2X/c/c1d3756a189806d92ba213cdf85f56678964716a.png) The search box will then stay open until you log out or close it. Anecdotally, I’ve heard from quite a few users who never knew about its existence, so I propose that by default the search box is open when you log in to iNaturalist, with the option to close it. Thoughts? ---

This sounds like a great idea. As you suggested it can be closed if users dont want to use it at that moment. ---

Yep, [a lot of people missed seeing the magnifying glass](https://www.inaturalist.org/blog/15132-new-header) on the original testing of the new header a couple years ago. ---

OK, this has now been implemented. For signed-in users, the search box is open by default. If you’re not logged in, it’s closed. ---
