Any tips for a successful mothing night?

Go out at two in the morning. Says the best moth-ers. Not kidding.

But try to go out just after dark, when it is not too cold; that’s when the moths come out. I’d suggest a white cloth for the ground as well; it can give you a lot of interesting unexpected visitors. Good luck!

Usually I head out a couple hours after sunset, allowing things to wake up. I dont know if I have noticed as much variation in time as I have with moon cycle and weather conditions. That said I know there are some “early flyers / late flyers” Which means if you want to get the full range trying different times is probably best. For me a couple hours after dark is just the most convieniant.

Weather makes a difference. Cloudy nights, especially foggy, cloudy nights with a good light source produce the best nights for me regardless of phase of the moon.

Bright full moons do not yield as good of results.

Avoid well lit areas. The darker the better.

If you can find an elevated area above the top of nearby trees, IMO this will get you more moths. A hillside with a clearing can work. My second floor looks over a forested mountainside and I get some amazing nights when it is cloudy and foggy.

A good light source is a big deal. I used to use a 160 watt mercury vapor lizard lamp and it was fantastic. Cost about $60 on Amazon and lasted two years. Entolights and LepiLED are great but more expensive. Conversely, they travel well unlike a MV lamp.

Don’t forget to look at the really small stuff. If you have a camera that can handle it, microleps can be amazing. Plus there are tons of them.

Bumping up to prevent closing topic.
I’m still going through my photos from last year. Finally got to July, so probably 2-3K more to go. Hopefully I’ll be done before the 2026 season starts.

The most recent moth photo I have: a dead ailanthus moth in a windowsill. Still pretty! It’s hard to get moths this late in the season in temperate regions such as these
