When you’re looking for something to photograph, your vision narrows because you’re looking for a specific thing, sacrificing field of view for detail. When you aren’t looking for something specific, you pick up more of your peripheral vision, and sacrifice detail for a wider field of view.
That’s why you see more when your don’t think about taking pictures. You spot more in your peripheral, then focus on it, rather than having a narrow focus to start with.
Taxonomically, osprey(s?) are outside of the hawk and eagle family, and are actually in a separate family of their own. So… an osprey is not a hawk or an eagle, but an… osprey.
