Lekked – the past tense of lek, meaning to participate in lek mating.
In lek mating, males gather in groups at a single location to display competitively for females. Probably most well-known in grouse, like this greater sage-grouse observation.
Lignin: “Lignin is a class of complex organic polymers that form key structural materials in the support tissues of most plants.” So, stuff like cell walls that make up wood, bark, etc.
Was the first non-pangram word I tried to put in today. Was shocked when it didn’t work!
Ethology is the study of non-human animal behavior. One of the most famous examples is Konrad Lorenz studying the imprinting behavior of geese. Here is a photo of imprinted geese following him just as the geese are following the parent in this iNat observation.
Perfectly good pangram if you ask me ![]()
The games – Spelling Bee and SpellBee – are oddly inconsistent in what biological terms and organism names they accept. SpellBee doesn’t recognize SKINK but it does recognize TOMTIT and COYPU. Go figure.
I know this is kind of slang term, but the word “floof”, which means a particularly fluffy or poofed up animal (Think borbs) wasn’t included ![]()
Maranta is a prayer plant, the namesake of Marantaceae.
A ratoon is a new shoot that forms after cropping, usually for gramnoids.
Are you able to define it? I’m not familiar with it and we ask that people posting in this topic define the term for others to help us learn.
Oh, sorry! Relating to blood.
(Any of the Observations featuring blood tests to show viruses or infections would fit here.)
Thanks!
Can’t believe they would leave this pangram out!
Natamycin is an antifungal medication and food preservative that is formed through Streptomyces bacteria fermentation! It may very well be in the food you are eating right now!
Blackback: a male gorilla who hasn’t fully matured into a silverback yet (~8-12 years old)
It was very hard to find an example blackback on iNat because not very many people want to post photos of the back side of gorillas ![]()
https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/251051409 shows the forward shot of a blackback – you can see from his face that he’s not fully mature yet, but you can’t actually see his black back
For comparison, a fully mature adult male with a beefy head, large sagittal crest, and silver saddle

If you want to see a blackback and silverback playing together, I recommend this really cute video from the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund.
A bolete is a mushroom with a spongy surface on the underside of the cap rather than the more typical gills.

Another unaccepted fungal word – hypha and its plural hyphae. These are filamentous structures used by most fungi for vegetative growth.
