Observations Not Uploading to Desktop App

Platform: Phone and Laptop

App version number, if a mobile app issue: 1.0.23

Browser, if a website issue: Chrome

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages:

Description of problem:

Step 1: I took a bunch of observations on my phone.

Step 2: I uploaded them all. There are no pending uploads on my phone.

Step 3: The new observations don’t appear on INaturalist on my laptop.

Can you give an example of an observation that appears for you on mobile but not on the web platform? Or some other details that could be used to ID these observations?

Sure Here Are my most recent laptop observations. And are my most recent telephone observations.

When you tap one of your missing observations and then tap Details/scroll to bottom to the “Share” link, does it give you a link to the observation?

What are the details of the wild turkey observation, like which date was it observed on, and which state did you see it in?

If you change the app view from grid to list, it will show the details (date, etc) like the desktop view:

That will make it easier to show last upload in the app vs the desktop site for this bug report.

The observations API also returns the same observations as what is shown on the website observation page. (white tail deer, unknown, red sun flower, etc.. June 14) That indicates the missing observations is not caused by iNat website.

Do you have links for the missing observations?

My guesses about what could be wrong

  • the observation were not uploaded to the iNaturalist
  • the observations were uploaded, but there is something odd with the observations that prevents the observations api from returning the observations. What is the geoprivacy and taxon privacy settings for the missing observations? Did any identifiers or curators flag your missing observations?

Yes! the link is there.

I should have also added - can you share that link here please? : )

Interesting. The app says the observations were uploaded. I haven’t made any changes to geoprivacy or taxon privacy settings (and probably couldn’t if I tried!).

A further oddity: I see on the link that bouteloua helped me find that others can indeed see my wild turkey observation–but I can’t, at least not on my laptop. Someone confirmed the identification and made it research grade.

You have two different accounts: raphael1c and raphael15430:

raphael15430 was created via Google log in on June 14th. Because raphael1c was not linked to your Google account, iNat created a new account for you.

There was a bug that allowed this to happen in the app in certain situations. I thought it had been fixed, but perhaps there are still some loopholes.

I can merge the accounts for you.

People can view the 54 observations for raphael15430 on the website if they look for raphael15430.

https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?subview=table&user_id=raphael15430&verifiable=any

It is odd the android app shows observations for both raphael1c and raphael15430 combined, while the website shows observations for raphael1c or raphael15430 separately. That might be two separate bugs. 1) How iNat creates a new account via Google login. 2) How the website and mobile apps display observations from separate accounts.

Thank you so much! I did not create that second account, and would greatly appreciate your merging the new one into the old.

If iNat codebase considers raphael1c and raphael15430 as not linked, then logged in user raphael15430 should not see data from raphael1c, and logged in user raphael1c should not see data from raphael15430.

It’s a security bug that raphael15430 and raphael1c data are both visible.
