Original image not showing in full resolution

I’m trying to download the image from this obs https://www.inaturalist.org/photos/407785428?size=original by clicking on the “original” size to download in original quality. However when clicked on it, it doesnt seem to display the original quality, which is said to be 6960 x 4640 pixels. When downloading it gets me a clearly smaller image of 1350 x 900. It doesnt usually do this when I download from the original size, does anyone know what’s wrong ?

The term “original” is probably misleading and should be adjusted. It refer to the maximum 2048x2048 that can be generated by iNaturalist. Or everything larger is reduced to 2048.

Okay, but it’s still weird because the biggest I can get from this obs is 1350 x 900

In this case the person uploaded possibly a cropped image1350 x 900.

But then why would it say 6960 x 4640 in the first place

This is the EXIF data generated by the camera.
Not all photo editing software also adjusts this metadata after cropping to reflect the new size.
This is nothing iNat can do sth about.

I’m seeing the same curious information about the photo dimensions. The original observation is here: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/229713051
For that photo, the metadata from the information tab on the image indicates “Width 1350, Height 900” but also indicates “Image width 6960, Image length 4640”.

I don’t know what those two different types of metadata categories refer to. Never noticed that previously on an image.

Thanks for mentioning this. So for bigger images it is definitely worth to crop on the region of interest, to avoid downsampling of the interesting part.

To take full advantage of a very high rez original, you might want to add additional copies of that original that have been cropped to highlight any small ID key regions, and add those copies after the full shot original.

Basically, it allows you to present details that would be lost from the whole shot, once it’s been reduced by the system. Pre-zooming with additional cropped regions brings those details out.

And you can bet that would bring a nice smile to many a weary Identifier face.
