Photos fail in web uploader when using Safari

Platform: macOS Tahoe 26.5.2

App version number, if a mobile app issue:

Browser, if a website issue: Safari (26.5.2)

URLs (aka web addresses) of any relevant observations or pages:

Screenshots of what you are seeing:

Description of problem:

Step 1: I load photos. Thumbnails are present (see screenshot)

Step 2: I fill in location or species name

Step 3: Photos disappear. All that’s visible is the photo ID (see screenshot)

Step 4: Rebooting doesn’t fix the problem

Thank you for any help you can provide.

the photos aren’t disappearing exactly. they’re just not loading successfully. the next time this happens, you can look in your browser’s developer tools console, and you’ll probably see some error messages logged there that may provide more detail about exactly what failed during upload.

that said, there have been many previous discussions in the forum about workflows in Mac that seem to result in lots of problems. among the many such threads, here are a couple random ones that look like they might be worth looking at:

I’ve uploaded thousands of Nikon photos via Firefox, Safari, and Brave and don’t have any issues.

  • what happens if you use a different browser?
  • can you share some of these photos with help@inaturalist.org so we can take a look? Please send them as attachments so that your email service doesn’t remove their metadata.

I will send you the photos pronto. Thanks for your help.

Description of problem:

Today I have been having a problem where all of the images I try to upload fail. the photos appear while “uploading metadata” before turning into red exclamation points. I have tried disabling my adblocker, as well as signing in and out, but that has not worked. Thank you for your help!

(Moved the above two posts to this thread, to consolidate the issue to one topic)

OK, someone else reported this via a support ticket and I think the issue is related to MacOS 26.5.2. I wasn’t able to replicate the issue until I updated my MacBook to that version just now. As far as I can tell, it only happens when:

  • your Mac is running MacOS 26.5.2
  • you are using Safari
  • you are importing photos from the Photos app
  1. In Safari, go to https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/upload
  2. Click on Choose Files
  3. Choose “Photos” under “Media” here

  1. Select photo(s) to import
  2. Import fails

I’ll make an issue, but it may be beyond our control and require Apple to fix it on their end.

Workarounds:

  • using a different browser for uploads would be easiest
  • you could also export your photos from the Photos app to your Desktop or another folder, then select them when using Safari. That’s working for me.

Thanks to @sylbobaggins for letting me know that MacOS 26.6 fixes this issue! I’m setting this to close.
