Quick question… why is it that when an observation is marked “No, it’s as good as it can be” under “Based on the evidence, can the Community Taxon be improved?” (for something that cannot be placed down to species level) sometimes the observation becomes RG at the higher taxon (example: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/338739233), while at other times the observation becomes Casual (example: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations/110616576)? The two examples I’m using are not at the same level (the RG is down to genus, while the Casual is only down to order)… does that have something to do with it? Or is it that someone is actively marking the observation RG or Casual arbitrarily? Thanks in advance…
From the Help page:
- Observations can be Research Grade at genus or any other level below family if the community agrees on an ID at that level and votes that the observation does not need more IDs
The first observation you refer to satisfies these requirements, the second does not.

Ah, thanks! Pretty straightforward.
