Sea record: location registered in Japan, but not showing up in Japan records (new yet not new)

On 13 May 2025 I took the Ishigaki - Yonaguni ferry mainly to find some subtropical seabirds I had no luck seeing before. Here is an incomplete list of my records for that day: https://www.inaturalist.org/observations?on=2025-05-13&user_id=housecrows

When I add Japan as a region to search in, I see only 4 of those records. I understand that these four probably fall within the perimeters of a certain landmass, even though the record was made out on open sea.

What I do not understand yet is that the other records show the location as tied to Japan (**
Community Curated:** Ryukyu Islands, JP) but they will not show in the Japan records.

It seems to me to be useful to show the link that has already been established…or am i overlooking something?

The waters the ferry travels through are no doubt partially international waters, but that’s it; no other country’s waters will have been touched, other than Japan’s.

Sorry for reopening a variation on an earlier topic about bird records taken on the Tokyo Islands ferries.

Hope to hear from devs, cheers,

Gerben

The community curated Ryukyu Islands place was uploaded by a user. It has a boundary that includes a lot of open sea:

Japan is a standard place imported from GADM that includes very little offshore area:

The community curated places have nothing to do with the standard ones, so they will not come up in searches for the latter.
