Using this observation as an example, I don’t see any reason why it shouldn’t be a research grade Wild Turkey (Meleagris gallopavo) observation, except for the fact that the leading id was for a ssp.
Wouldn’t it make sense to have the observation change to research grade at the species level when something like this happens, instead of keeping it needs id at the subspecies level?
