Survey about the impact of iNaturalist (and citizen science in general!) in Conservation and Ecology!

is this for an actual school course? i’m surprised that a college instructor would have their students conduct a survey on an anonymous convenience sample, especially without mentioning who is overseeing everything.

109 clicks on your link = about a hundred competed forms ? How many do you need?

Just a mini update for everyone -

Thank you so much to everyone who has responded so far!

A few days from now, I’ll move however many responses that I’ve had over to google sheets, and begin my analysis. I will keep the survey open for responses through, and add a link to it in my iNaturalist journal (as recommended by @AdamWargon, thank you!).

I have also seen that a lot of you are interested to see the results of this survey, and although I won’t be able to share my actual research project due to the rules my college has in place, I’d love to share some of the findings with you all! I will therefore make some form of document showing the results of the survey, alongside some minor analysis and notes, and will post it on the forum, likely under a new topic. However, it will take me some time to properly analyse the data and I will have to ensure that enough time has passed between me submitting my project (late November) and me releasing the results online so that I can easily prove that I have not plagiarised the data. This means it’ll probably take a few months before the results make it back to you guys, but rest assured, they will be coming!

Again, I really appreciate all the responses that you’ve all sent - I didn’t expect to be able to get this many responses, and I certainly didn’t expect so many people to give such detailed and helpful responses :)) I’m still quite new to this community and it’s been so nice to see firsthand how welcoming, supportive, and enthusiastic everyone is!

Yes it is! It is for a college project in the UK sense though, (ie the year before university, not university itself) so it’s not quite the level you’re probably thinking of! I completely forgot in the original post that university and collage synonymous in other places, sorry if thats caused any confusion!

Originally, I was told I needed an absolute minimum of 50 responses and had been stuck at 15 for a long time before posting on here and reddit, so I’ve actually exceeded the minimum that I needed by quite a lot, which I’m really excited about! I’m still happy to receive more responses though to improve the quality of my data and project (and also because I’ve been learning a lot myself too!!). I really didn’t anticipate so many people taking part, but it’s definitely a welcome turn of events!

We are interested in (us) iNat. Some of us have invested years here. Some are active research scientists, tearing their hair out, as they maintain the quality of their data.

There are some VERY long forum threads with vehement and heated discussions. But forum users are a self-selected group of - my name is Diana and I am addicted to IDing on iNat … back to GSB where I am scooping teaspoons from the ocean!

Completed and looking forward to your results

Just an FYI, I think there’s a large group of people on Bugguide who hate iNaturalist. It might be a good idea to send the survey their way to get the other side

Done! And, as a matter of fact, I’m co-moderating the Citizen Science panel at our local science fiction convention next weekend, and I plan on talking up iNat quite a bit.

Thats so exciting!!

Another update - I’ve transferred the current results over to sheets and i will begin my analysis. Across everywhere I’ve posted I gained a total of 296 responses alltogether (the vast majority from here and reddit), which is absolutely insane! Thank you so much!

As I mentioned before, I won’t close the survey and I will share the results, but it will be a while before I’ll be able to. I really appreciate everyone’s responses and support!

Firstly a big welcome, I was a newcomer here not so long ago !!

Survey well constructed and some thought provoking questions. Do any of us actually know how useful our observations are to the wider nature conservation programme ?

Don’t be afraid to ask for help - people here are generally very receptive and helpful !!
