Unable to log back in to iNat site with password

I’m not expecting anyone to answer with a solution but I wanted to discuss this to see if some people were having the same problem.

So on my MacBook, I use the iNat website on my Safari tab and it sometimes does this thing where it logs me out when i visit the site again. I have to type in my username and password and click the Remember Me button so I don’t have to do the process again. But suddenly in June, when I had to log in again, it said that my password was invalid so in couldn’t get back into my account. This was around the time when a lot of passwords online were getting leaked or so I’ve heard so I changed my password at least 2 times and it resulted in the same issue.

I emailed iNat staff about the issue and they suggested that I entered my email address instead of my username and log in on Google Chrome but the result was still the same. I also tried logging back in on my other laptop but to no avail. So I guess I can never log back into my account on my computers again. I have the app and the issue is does not happen with the app since it never logs me out and I have the iNat community form on my computer which is what I’m typing on now. But I feel like if I log out of those platforms on my phone and computer and I get the same issue, then I can no longer have access to my accounts again unless I create a new one.

Has anyone else experienced this type of issue and does anyone know what could’ve caused it?

Sorry, but working with the staff to resolve the issue is probably your best bet.

Do you still have access to the email connected to your iNat account? Have you tried using the password reset form?

I sent them several password reset emails with the email I use for the website but the staff none had been opened. He asked me if I’m sure I changed my password which I did several times and saved the login information. Then that’s when we had a conversation on trying out different browsers, double-checking to make sure the password was correct and entering my email address instead of my username. All of which didn’t work.

i’ve never done iNat’s password reset process, but this sounds wrong. a typical automated password reset process should never involve you sending an e-mail.

instead, a typical password reset process would involve you asking for a reset via the website, then receiving an e-mail with a reset link. from there, that link should direct you to a reset page, where you would reset your password.

alternatively, instead of receiving an e-mail with a reset link, you might receive an e-mail containing a code, which you would then have to input in the password reset page before resetting your password.

based on a Help article describing the process, it sounds like iNat’s process will send you an e-mail with a link to reset your password.

if you did in fact go through the proper process, then i would suggest that you try manually inputting the password to log into the site, rather than relying on a password keeper, the first time you attempt to log in after changing your password. this will rule out the possibility your password keeper is using the wrong password to log in. (alternatively, i think you can use private browsing mode, and that should require you to input your password manually, bypassing your password keeper.)

Yes, a password keeper doesn’t necessarily update until the new password is used.

This probably isn’t it, but when I have to log back in to the forum, I usually forget that I actually made the account on the Inat website. They are two different platforms (?), but there is an option to log into the forum with your website account.

Are you sure you’re selecting the right log in option?

I already have my website account to log into the forum. I’m still logged in now.

I already tried the reset password option and manually inputting my password several times and it still said it was invalid.

can you provide a screenshot of the e-mail you received when you initiated the password reset process? it should have included a link to go to to change your password. please make sure you redact your own e-mail address and any other personally identifying information, if you don’t want to share those. however, it would be helpful to see the sender’s address and the e-mail subject and body.

as i recall (based on screenshots that you shared previously but which are now removed for privacy reasons), tiwane indicated in his direct messages to you that it looked like you never opened the messages that were sent to you. without opening the e-mail to get the password reset link, i’m not sure how you would have completed the password reset process.
